more about treatment duration

Flexible. Discreet. Professional.

HarmonieSchiene® aligners are especially suitable for adult patients with slightly misaligned front teeth (crowding or gaps), twisted or crooked teeth. They are clear and nearly invisible inside your mouth, do not disrupt everyday life, and can be removed. This gives you flexibility at all times.

What can the aligners do?

No need to attach them to the teeth

Since the aligners are removable and sit loosely on the teeth, nothing needs to be glued onto the teeth. This is also why there are no problems or risks that could arise by removing them after treatment is completed.

Optimal hygiene & cleaning

The aligners are removed while eating and brushing teeth. It is therefore possible to continue maintaining a perfect oral hygiene routine, and the risk of developing cavities or gingivitis is significantly lower than with a fixed device.

Also suitable for people with allergies

HarmonieSchiene® aligners are made from medical-grade PET (polyethylene terephthalate)/PU (polyurethane). The material does not contain any plasticizers and is therefore free from bisphenol A (BPA) and metals. This means that the aligners are safe for patients with a nickel allergy, for example.

What types of crooked teeth
can be treated?

HarmonieSchiene® aligners are designed for use on adult patients. In most cases, we can determine whether you are a good candidate for treatment with clear aligners in an initial, non-binding consultation. In general, aligner treatment can produce optimal results on crowded teeth, gaps between the front teeth, and twisted or crooked upper or lower teeth.

An easy, fast, & inexpensive way
to straighten teeth

1

Creating dental impressions
and planning

The first step is to create a dental impression of your upper and lower teeth and examine your current dental situation. This is done at our dental clinic in Frankfurt, Germany. We then send your impression to the Orthos specialist laboratory. In the meantime, we will plan the next steps for your treatment and determine together the optimal position of your teeth.

2

Testing process
and quote

The laboratory will conduct a test to determine your options and create a “Harmonie Plan” – a no-obligation quote tailored to your needs. In addition to the costs, the quote will indicate the number of aligners you will receive and the estimated length of time of your dental correction process. At your request, the laboratory can produce a “target model” that shows how your teeth will look after correction.

3

Production
and insertion

After you confirm acceptance of the quote, the required number of HarmonieSchiene® aligners will be custom-made in the Orthos laboratory and sent back to us for insertion. We will provide you with all the essential information on how to use and clean your new aligners. You will wear the HarmonieSchiene® aligners 24 hours a day (except when eating or cleaning your teeth). The first aligners stay in your mouth for around 3 weeks. After that, they are switched out every two weeks. Your dental correction process will be monitored regularly in our dental clinic.

4

Ensuring
long-lasting results

It is recommended that you ensure the long-term stability of your results, otherwise your teeth will shift back to their original position. There are two options available for this. The first is a fixed retainer that is glued to the inside surfaces of your teeth. The second is another aligner that you wear at night while you sleep. We are happy to advise you on the pros and cons of each option.

FAQ Frequently Asked Questions

How do aligners straighten my teeth?

The impressions of your upper and lower teeth taken at the beginning of the process serve as the basis of treatment with the HarmonieSchiene® aligners. The aligners, customized from the impressions, shift your teeth little by little into the desired position. Each aligner is worn 24 hours a day for 14 days until you get the smile you want. At the end of the treatment and at your request, you will receive what is called a retainer to wear at night or all the time if you so choose. This will ensure that your teeth stay in the new position and don’t shift back to their former position.

What are the aligners made of?

The clear aligners are made from special, medical-grade PET (polyethylene terephthalate)/PU (polyurethane). The material does not contain any plasticizers and is therefore free from bisphenol A (BPA) and also suitable for many people with allergies.

Are the aligners made in Germany?

Yes. HarmonieSchiene® aligners are a product of the Orthos specialist laboratory for orthodontics with headquarters in Frankfurt and Weimar, Germany. The aligners are also exclusively custom-made at these two locations in accordance with German quality guidelines. With over 35 years’ experience in the sector, the Orthos system is now trusted by more than 5,000 dentists in Germany.

Is the treatment covered by health insurance?

Because this treatment is a purely cosmetic correction, it is not covered by statutory health insurance. Private health insurers or supplementary dental insurance providers may cover the costs of treatment depending on your contract/conditions. Please contact your provider in advance for more information.

What should I expect in terms of costs? Can I pay in installments?

The costs and duration of treatment vary from patient to patient because every individual and every dental situation is different. The lab costs run from €700 to €3,000 depending on the required number of aligners. This does not include the fee we charge for our dental services. We provide you with a clear, personalized offer after your initial examination at our clinic so that you can keep track of the costs at all times without having to worry about any hidden fees. You can then think it over and decide whether you would like to go ahead with the treatment.

Our goal of course is for everyone to be happy with their smile. This is why, at our dental clinic in Frankfurt-Bockenheim, in cooperation with the Deutsches Zahnärztliches Rechenzentrum (DZR) billing service, we offer you the option of paying for your treatment in flexible installments. Just let us know if you’re interested.

How often should I wear the aligners?

In order for your treatment to succeed within the planned time period, you will need to wear your aligners 24 hours a day. The aligners were intentionally designed to be very thin and transparent so that you will get used to them quickly. Once they become part of your daily life, they are barely noticeable and will not bother you when you are speaking. However, they should be removed before you eat, drink (except water), and brush your teeth.

How long does it take on average to straighten teeth with HarmonieSchiene® aligners?

It depends on the type of misalignment and varies from patient to patient. HarmonieSchiene® aligners are designed for mild to moderately severe cases. The treatment duration is usually 3 to 6 months, which is considerably shorter than orthodontic treatments using traditional braces. The exact treatment duration will be specified in your personalized Harmonie Plan.

How are the aligners cleaned?

The Orthos aligners can be easily and thoroughly cleaned with a toothbrush and toothpaste under cold or lukewarm water. Never clean the aligners under hot water, as the heat will deform the aligners and change their effect.

Can I eat/drink/smoke/chew gum while wearing the aligners?

We recommend that you do not smoke or eat while you are wearing the aligners. Above all, you must avoid any sugary or highly acidic foods such as soft drinks, fruit juices, candy, etc. Because the aligners are positioned on top of the teeth, thus preventing your saliva from naturally cleaning them, your risk of cavities increases and damage to your teeth can occur faster. You should always remove the aligners before eating. You will be given a stylish HarmonieSchiene® case for your aligners that you can keep with you at all times. This will prevent you from losing them and ensure they are always safely stored.

Can I bleach/whiten my teeth at the same time?

We advise you against this. If you are interesting in whitening/bleaching your teeth, we recommend that you do so before or after treatment with HarmonieSchiene® aligners. You can also visit us at our dental clinic for an in-depth consultation on bleaching.

Do I need to see the dentist regularly?

Regular visits to our dental clinic in Frankfurt-Bockenheim are essential and decisive for achieving optimal results and your desired treatment goals. The aligners alone are not a substitute for regular dental visits. It is also important for your teeth to be healthy and clean before you begin aligner treatment. This is why we conduct a thorough examination of the condition of your teeth during your first appointment and determine whether you need any preliminary treatment. Only then can we begin the process of straightening your teeth.

What happens if I wear the aligners for less than 24 hours a day?

For optimal treatment results, it is essential that you wear the aligners 24 hours a day. If you fail to do this, your teeth will not shift as planned and the next set of aligners might not fit yet, which could slow down the entire treatment.

Does this treatment work for everyone and can it straighten my crooked teeth?

HarmonieSchiene® aligners are not suitable for every type of misalignment. It is specially designed to correct the front teeth. After an impression is taken of your teeth, we send your models to the Orthos laboratory, where your subsequent aligners will also be made. Measurements are taken beforehand to determine whether you are a good candidate for successful aligner treatment. In more complex cases or at your request, the laboratory can produce a digital Harmonie image or a physical Harmonie model that shows you in advance how your teeth will look after the correction.

Is the treatment painful?

Everyone feels pain differently. A certain amount of pressure must be applied so that your teeth shift into the right position. You will not experience any severe pain, but instead you might feel something similar to an intense muscle ache. This feeling of pressure can occur especially when removing and replacing the aligners or when putting in new aligners. The more your teeth move into the target position, the less pressure you will feel on your teeth.

What should I do if I lose my aligner?

If you lose an aligner, please contact us immediately. Depending on how long you have already been wearing the aligner, you may be able to move up to the next one at little sooner. In some cases we may also be able to reproduce the same aligners.

What happens if my teeth are still not straight after the last aligner?

If this happens, we will take a new impression of your teeth at our dental clinic in Frankfurt-Bockenheim, which will be used to make additional aligners in the laboratory. You will need to wear them as instructed until your teeth reach the right position and the treatment goal has been achieved.

Can my teeth shift back to their original position?

After completing your treatment with HarmonieSchiene® aligners, you will have the option of securing your teeth in position with a retainer. There are two ways to do this: One is by using another clear aligner, which is worn for at least 12 months only while sleeping. The other is a wire that is attached to the inside surfaces of your teeth. Either solution will prevent your teeth from shifting back to their previous position and ensure beautiful, long-lasting results.
